INTRODUCTION 简述
My bachelor project is to design a carousel book for "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", one of the stories written by Hans Christian Anderson. The whole book is in bilingual, it has 12 pages in total: The front side shows the illustrations and English texts, and the back side are the Chinese translation and page numbers.
我的毕业设计是为安徒生所著的《坚定的锡兵》这个童话故事，做旋转木马书排版设计。书内语言是双语，总共有 12 页。正面展现英文文本和插图，背面则是中文的故事翻译和页码。
STORY IN BRIEF 故事简述
On a little boy's birthday party, he received a box of tin soldier as a gift. Because the tin was not enough, one of the tin soldiers had only one leg, but he is still as steadfast as his 24 brothers. The little boy put the soldier on the desk, here he first met the beautiful little dancer, and fell in love with her. Then a bogey came out from the snuff bottle and warn the tin soldier do not keep his eyes on the things which is not belong to him, or the soldier will get punishment. On the next morning, the bogey play tricks on the soldier and make him fall downstairs, then two naughty boys picked up the tin soldier and put him on a paper boat, and send him to a journey. The paper boat quickly went through the sewer. Finally, the boat broken beneath the tin soldier, and a big fish swallowed him. After a period of dark inside the fish's belly, the housemaid picked up the tin soldier from the dark and put him back to the table. The tin soldier met the little dancer again, suddenly one of the boys caught the tin soldier, and threw him to the fireplace. The tin soldier soon started to melt. Then a gust of wind sent the little dancer to the tin soldier. On the next morning, the maid found that two heart lay together.
在一个小男孩的生日会上，他收到了一盒锡兵作为礼物。因为制作时的锡不够用了，其中一个锡兵只有一条腿，但他比其他 24 个兄弟还要坚定。小男孩将锡兵放上桌子，在这里锡兵第一次见到了美丽的小舞蹈家并坠入爱河。12 点的钟敲过后，鼻烟壶里的黑妖精跑出来，警告锡兵管好他的眼睛，不要对不属于他的东西打主意，不然会受到惩罚。第二天早上，黑妖精捣乱让锡兵从窗台跌落下去。两个调皮鬼捡走了地上的锡兵，并把他放进了一个小纸船，顺着水流漂进下水道里。最终纸船被水浸湿，锡兵也被一条大鱼吞进肚子。大鱼肚子里一片黑暗，直到女仆把鱼剖腹，锡兵才得以重见光明。女仆用手指夹起锡兵，把他放回桌子上，他又回到了这里，重新见到了舞蹈家。突然之间，一个小男孩把锡兵用力地扔进了壁炉。锡兵开始渐渐融化，就在这时，一股风带起了舞蹈家，向着他而来。第二天早晨，女仆清理炉灰的时候，发现两颗心躺在一起。
KEY MESSAGE OF THE STORY 中心思想
Even the tin soldier has only one leg, he stood as steady as ever.
Wherever he was.
The same as his love to the dancer.

TARGET AUDIENCE （目标群体）
Firstly, I've thought about that the target group of the book and the fairy tale is only children, but then, here comes an idea that"the picture book can be share to others, not only children can read the illustrated books"So, the target group had spread to teenagers and also adults.
首先，我有想过童话故事和这本书的受众主要是幼儿。但是接着，我脑子里出现了一个想法，“插图本并不是只有小孩可以看，它可以用来和他人共同阅读。”于是，受众范围扩散到了青少年和成年人。
THE BENEFITS OF THE BOOK （这本书的益处）
In fact, the advantage of reading is that it can help you receive new knowledge.
首先，阅读的好处一直是能帮助你人们获得知识。
So, the same as this carousel book. On one hand, It can be used to read, follow the illustrations and dialogue in English on the front side, people who read the book can know how the story going; and if they want to know the meaning of the tale in Chinese, it also have Chinese translation on the backside of the carousel book.
这本书也是一样的。一方面，你可以像普通书本一样翻阅它，从正面看，跟随着书中的插画和英文对话了解故事的发展；从背面看，则可以知道故事的中文翻译。
On the other hands, the carousel book can be used as an art craft to place everywhere, it can be expanded as a sign. It can also be connected to its cover and back cover, standing up to become a three-dimensional carousel book.
另一方面，这本书可以被当作工艺品放在任何地方。它可以被完全展开，也可以将它立起来组成一本立体书。
DESIGN PART （设计）
CHARACTER DESIGN---THE TIN SOLDIER （角色设计 --- 锡兵）
He appeared in many different scenes as a protagonist. In the birthday present box, he stands among his brothers; then in the bogey’s scene, he lays on the snuff bottle (change a little bit on where the soldier is.); the bogey made fool of him, controlled a little boy to threw the soldier out of the window, then he fell at breathtaking speed and landed cap first, with his bayonet buried between the paving stones and his one leg stuck straight in the air; two naughty boys put him on a handmade paper boat and brought him to the journey through sewer; the paper boat broken and he was swallowed by a big fish; The housemaid picked up the soldier from the big fish’s belly and brought him back to the desk; another little boy threw the soldier to the fire; and the final scene that the soldier start to melt, next day morning he became a tin.
他以主角的身份出现在许多不同的场景中。在生日礼物盒里，他站在兄弟们中间；然后在黑妖精的场景里，他躺在鼻烟瓶上（稍微改变一下士兵的位置）；妖怪愚弄了他，控制一个小男孩把士兵扔出窗外，然后他以惊人的速度摔倒，头朝下，刺刀埋在了铺路石和他的一条腿直插在空中；两个淘气的男孩把他放在一条手工纸船上，把他从下水道带到旅途中；纸船坏了，他被一条大鱼吞了下去；女佣从大鱼的肚子里夹起士兵，把他带回书桌；另一个小男孩把士兵扔到大火；士兵开始融化的最后一幕，第二天早晨他变成了一个锡心。
CHARACTER DESIGN---THE LITTLE DANCER （角色设计 --- 小舞蹈家）
She’s not the same as the soldier, she basically stood in the open way of the cardboard castle and seldom move. The only one time she changes her posture is that at the end of this story, a gust of wind send the little dancer to the soldier who was in the flames. The author wrote that the little dancer was like a “sylph”, which means an imaginary spirit of the air, commonly used to describe a slim woman. And also, the final scene that she burned then left with the glass heart. Stayed with the tin of the soldier.
她和那个士兵不一样，她基本上是站在纸板城堡的空地上，很少走动。她唯一一次改变姿势是在故事的结尾，一阵风把小舞者送到了烈火中的士兵那里。作者写道，这个小舞者就像一个“精灵”，意指一种想象中的空气精灵，通常用来形容一个苗条的女人。还有，最后一幕，她燃烧后留下的玻璃心。和士兵的锡心呆在一起。
CHARACTER DESIGN---THE BOGEY（角色设计 --- 鼻烟妖精）
Red and Dark Blue (hat, I think that this two color will make readers feel that ‘this is not a good guy’); Light Blue and Light Purple (the whole face); Grey and white (his mouth and the teeth, also his beard); Dark Blue and red (Dark Blue is the color of his eyes, and the small red circle on it was the ambient color of the surroundings. The same reason as his hat.) Well, this bogey only has one stage, just the big head. Because after this scene, he started to control little boys to play tricks on the tin soldier.
红色和深蓝（帽子，我想这两种颜色会让读者觉得‘这不是个好人’）；浅蓝色和浅紫色（整张脸）；灰色和白色（他的嘴和牙齿，还有胡子）；深蓝和红色（深蓝是他的眼睛的颜色，上面的小红圈是周围环境的颜色）。原因和他的帽子一样。）这个妖精只有一个舞台，只有一个大脑袋。因为在这一幕之后，他开始控制小男孩捉弄铁皮士兵。
TYPEFACE DESIGN （ 字体设计）
The design concept of this font comes from this fairy tale. I want to design my own font for this book. The hero of the book, even if only one leg, but no matter what difficulties can stand firmly.
I just wanted to give this attribute to this font,
"even if there is a disability, it can stand steadily.”
So, there is a break on each letter, but it's still balanced.
这种字体的设计理念来自这个童话故事。我想为这本书设计我自己的字体。书中的英雄，哪怕只有一条腿，但无论遇到什么困难都能站稳脚跟。
我只想把这个属性赋予这个字体，
“即使有残缺，也能坚定地站立着。”
所以，每个字母都有一个破碎的地方，但它仍然是平衡的。
